May is a very busy time of the year. We are finishing up teaching our units as best we can along with a lot of fun events that happen. We will be keeping busy for sure!!
Our first fun event is Surprise day. This is a fun day where I have been collecting letters and notes from you and keeping it a secret. On Surprise day, I put them all in a big read box and they get to wonder about it all day long! I give them hints throughout the day to see if they can guess what this box has to do with our Surprise day. At reader's workshop time we open the box and discover all the mail inside. They go to their reading spots and I deliver the mail! They are soooo excited to get all the mail from family and friends!! I have even had students cry because they felt so special! Remember to send them in by May 17 to:
Your Child's Name
Mrs. Gilde's Class
107 East Maple Street
McBain, Mi 49657
Remember that this is a secret!!! Please do not tell your child about it! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
Fun to Be Fit is right around the corner as well. This is another exciting and fun day!! We will be running on the track this year, unless it rains like it did last year! It will be a blast to see all of us out there running for fitness!! If you would like to come and run with us, please feel free to do so. It will be from 1-1:30. I will be asking for some specific snacks later.
Special Person's Day will be May 31. This is another special day where your child will invite a special person in to our classroom to share some of the things that they have been reading and learning about this year. We will be making an invitation in class for your child to give to their special person to come.
In June we will be having track and field day and are trying to plan a field trip as well. The rest of the year has a lot of BIG events!! A great end to a great year!!

Hi There,
There's not a lot going on at the time being. It's kind of the calm before the storm. May is a very busy month. Hope the weather gets a little warmer!!
We do need to make up a snow day. June 10 will now be our last day of school.
Soccer registration is open. Contact Dave Skinner at NMC for sign up.
NED yo-yo's are still on sale through Wednesday. Cost ranges from $7-$15.
Mileage club should be able to start up this week. It was too wet and muddy last week. Let's cross our fingers!! Mrs. Kelly is still in need of helpers! Please contact her at 825-2021. I also have a link to her blog on my blog, you can contact her through that as well.
Surprise day is coming up in May. This is a secret to the class. Don't say a word!!! Your job is to send a few letters to your child. You may also ask friends and family to send them in as well. Have them sent to McBain Elementary, 107 E. Maple Street, McBain, Mi 49657. Make sure you put on there your child's name and my name as well. On Surprise day we have a lot of fun opening our mail from our family and friends. I will also be sending a letter home soon about this. It's a fun and exciting day!!
Fun to be fit t-Shirt order forms are due on Monday, April 22. Super exited about this event as well!!

We received and email today informing us that we do have to make up a day of school and therefore the last day of school is now Monday, June 10. It will be a full day.
Mileage club starts Monday!! Yay! Hopefully the playground and the weather will cooperate!
Kaden is the first one to make it to 200 books read with his reading journal!!!! He earned himself a Butterfinger candy bar!! Way to read, Kaden!!

Super Fun Week!
We had a super fun week last week with reading month! We had a surprise guest reader come in on Wednesday. Donna Bode, one of our wonderful bus drivers (and Trey's grandma) came and read us 2 books! She was our surprise celebrity reader! It was such a great surprise to have a guest come to our room and read to us!! She read us the Lorax and The Great Kapok Tree.
We also had the Whispering Pines Mobile Zoo come and share some Rainforest animals with us. We were allowed to touch some of them and got a real close look at them!! Some too close!! There were lizards and snakes - even a big albino boa constrictor! It was a baby but it was HUGE! I wasn't brave enough to touch that one but many in the class were! So proud of them!! We also saw monkeys and birds.
We had our cup stacking tournament on Friday! What great stackers we have!! Congratulations to Kaden Abrahamson who won a medal!!
This Friday is dress in animal print and don't forget your quarters to help save the rainforest!!

Praying for NOT another snow day!
Can it be a full week of school?? I certainly hope so! I am really ready to teach these kiddos something! I hope you got your progress reports. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me! I feel like we just sent report cards....basically we did. I think someone counted and we may have only had 10 days of school since report cards went home. It feels about right!
Here are a few announcements from Mrs. Kelley:
Parents - A total of $10,633.92 was raised for the American Heart Association from our Jump Rope for Heart Event. Thanks to all that supported this event. The American Heart Association sends a huge thank you to our community! Note...if your child raised money, the thank you gifts will be in in a few weeks.
Cup Stack Tournament - Forms were sent home and need to be turned in by Monday, March 4th, if your child wants to participate. The tournament is Friday, March 8th during the school day.
Reading month starts on Friday!!! We are going to Go Wild For Reading!! We are doing a Rainforest theme this year. Our class will be creating and learning specifically about the toucan. If you have any books or information to share that would be great!! We will be having popcorn Fridays. Your child can purchase a bag of popcorn for a quarter and the money will go to help save the rainforest! How cool is that!! Our first dress up day is Friday. We are to dress like a safari person. Let's Go Wild for Reading!!
We will also be having the book fair as well during reading month. Here is a note from our PTO:
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Dear Parents (and Grandparents),
The PTO is looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming Book Fair.
We are seeking volunteers to help students browse and purchase books on March 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 27th, and 28th from 11:30am-3:00pm. The Book Fair will be set-up in the Library and students will come down with their entire class - - so the more volunteers we have to help, the smoother it will go. If you’d be willing to help out for an afternoon (or partial afternoon) please let us know.
We are also extending our hours on Thursday March 21st & Thursday March 28th from 3:00-6:00 so that families & community members can browse and shop. We are looking for volunteers to run the fair during these extended hours as well.
If you would be willing to help out with the Book Fair, please contact Sherry Brinks at sherrybrinks@gmail.com (825-2021/884-9566) or LeighAnn Sikkema at lasikkema@mcbain.org (825-8041).
Thanks for supporting your PTO.

What a Blast!
We had so much fun on Thursday with Jump Rope for Heart and our Valentine's Day Party all in the same day!! You would think that the kiddos would be a little tuckered out from the morning and would have a hard time partying in the afternoon. Not so!!! They were full of energy and so excited to read all of their Valentine cards! Thank you to the 4 amazing moms who helped out!!
This week we will hit the 100th day of school. FINALLY!!!! It keeps moving away from us with these snow days, but this week it will finally arrive! We will be doing some fun activities with Zero the Hero!

Crazy Weather
I can't believe this crazy weather!!! We had inside recess all last week and it looks like we may be inside again this week, if we ever get back to school! We did mix it up a bit and we did do some zumba dancing. The kids thought it was hard, I just think it takes a little practice. But, I'm not going to say that too loud because I really don't think any of us want to take our recesses INDOORS to practice it!
We have some important dates coming up like Jump Rope for Heart and Valentines Day! They are both going to be on Thursday, February 14. We will jump in the morning and have our celebration in the afternoon. It will be a super fun day. Please be sure to be raising some money if you can. Forms went home last week and need to be turned in on the 11th. If your child brought one home with the wrong name, it was my mistake. Please just cross out that child's name and write your child's name. Thanks and sorry for the mix up. I will be sending home a container for you and your child to decorate together for their Valentine cards. You may make it look however you would like! Enjoy the project! Please have it her on or before February 14. A class list will be coming home this week for you to start working on cards.
Report cards went home on Friday. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call me.
Looking forward to another great week!
